Facebook, the second-most popular social networking Web site, will work with Comcast Corp. to encourage users to create video diaries for the Internet and for cable television.
Users will be able to contribute and share videos on Comcast’s Ziddio Web site starting in March, Facebook said today in a statement. Comcast, the biggest U.S. cable TV service, will put the best clips on its video-on-demand service in a show called “Facebook Diaries.”
The agreement is a way for Philadelphia-based Comcast to get more clips on Ziddio, a video-sharing Web site it created last year that competes with YouTube. For Facebook, the accord is a way to get its name in front of 24.2 million Comcast cable subscribers.
R.J. Cutler, the producer of TV shows including “American High,” will create 10 half-hour episodes from the best clips, which will appear online and on Comcast cable systems.
Facebook’s 16 million members create online profiles, from which they send messages, share photos and create interest groups. The site, founded in 2004 by Harvard University dropout Mark Zuckerberg, is second in terms of users in social networking sites to News Corp.’s MySpace.
Internet users are becoming more comfortable with sharing details of their lives online. Social networking Web sites such as MySpace and Facebook attract more than half of U.S. teenagers that use the Internet, according to a survey released last month by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, a nonprofit research group in Washington.
The agreement also highlights the blurring line between television and the Internet, as well as the growing popularity of online talent shows. Yahoo! Inc., owner of the most-visited U.S. Web site, in November bought a Web site called Bix that holds online contests for karaoke, dance, comedy, beauty, photography and writing.
Shares of Comcast fell 18 cents to $42.45 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. They have risen less than 1 percent this year.
