Apple fans and tech junkies got an overdose of silicon power when Apple announced an 8-core Xeon processor MacPro.
I admit to being a bit of a technophiliac myself, and so this news and the flashy new pictures on the Apple website had me salivating, even though I have no idea what the hell an 8-core Xeon processor is, or what it can do. I’m almost positive it can launch satellites into orbit, and possibly create artificial life, but Steve Jobs is just too modest to admit to those capabilities.
So what specifically is good about this new MacPro? According to Apple,
Unparalleled expansion Mac Pro accommodates up to four drives and 3TB of storage, offers eight DIMM slots to fill with up to 16GB of RAM, and provides up to two SuperDrives. It also gives you four PCI Express slots and lots of I/O options for ultimate flexibility.
It also touts 33 MILLION different configurations. So I naturally did what anyone smitten young man would do, I stacked my baby with the biggest and best options available. Why? Well, long story short, I’m starting up my own small company, and it’ll require a bit of graphics and video editing and web “stuff” (yes, it’s another one of those “Dot-Com’s”.
At the end, with the highest possible configuration options that Apple has to offer, my new machine ended up costing $18,371… or as Apple would like to put it, only $434 per month (if I qualify for something or the other). Is it worth it to pay that much and have the sweetest machine outside the Pentagon? Hmmm… I’m not too sure.
This proved that Apple was an expensive computer! Or did it? Well, I then went out and priced a new Dell in the same manner (stuff the box with everything and then add some more!). The most that Dell was able to squeeze out of me was a paltry $13,365, or $354 per month. That’s it? but I have a fat wallet and VC’s willing to foot the bill! Why won’t you take more money?? As it turns out, it’s simply not possible for Dell to create something more expensive. Apple wins.
In all fairness, when Dell comes out with their own bigger and badder machine, I’m sure they’ll be able to entice me into throwing more money, but until then, Apple will have to find ways to spend my hard earned cash (ok, other people’s hard earned cash that I convinced some old investors to give me).
I wonder how awesome emails will be on this new machine…
NOTE: No, I do not have VC money to blow on this toy yet. It just made the article more interesting.
